DIRECTIONS: I-64, Exit 231B on to Croaker Rd, (Rt. 607 N) for 1 mi.  Turn night onto Riverview Rd. (Rt. 606).  Take Rt. 606 for about 1 1/2 mi., turn left into park.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  2,505 acre state park with day use facilities, shelters, trails, visitor center and boat launch.  Located in a rare and delicate pristine woodland and marsh environment on the York River, this park serves as a nursery for marine life throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

Where freshwater and saltwater meet to create a rich habitat for marine and plant life, this park is on the York River offers clues to a rich natural and cutural history. Programs, activities and visitor center displays focus on the history, use and preservation of the York River and its marshes, as well as wildlife found in the river and the park.

More than 30 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails allow visitors to explore the marsh, river shoreline and forests. A boat ramp, fresh and saltwater fishing spots, a saltwater fishing pier, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and seasonal bike, boat, and recreational equipment rentals are available. York River is a day-use park with no overnight accommodations.

PARKING:  5 designated accessible parking spaces, located near the visitor center.  Accessible parking space 10 ft. wide.  Accessible aisle 3 ft. wide.  Nearby ramps well marked. 

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  3 asphalt trails, one down to marsh, one to the canoe dock, and a trail around the visitor center, are accessible to persons with mobility disabilities and for electric wheelchair users.  Trails to canoe dock and Taskinas Creek to the marsh have steep grades may require assistance for persons in wheelchairs.  Length of paths 1/2 mi. each. 

ENTRANCE:  At visitor center.  No steps.  2 glass entry doors, 36 in. wide, easily open in and out with  clearly marked bar handle. 

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  In visitor center and at picnic area.  Available without steps.  Doors 36 in. wide, open in & out.  Turns to enter.  Wheelchair accessible stalls have 36 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails.  36 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 30 in.   Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Rest rooms identified by raised figures with pants or skirt on the door to designate men or women.

Boat launch area has ADA stall but steps lead into restrooms.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
Educators of students with hearing and/or visual disabilities can bring students to the park for adapted activities.  Call 804-684-7526 for more information.

For guests with hearing disabilities, there are signing interpreters available with advance notice. 

For guests with visual disabilities, there are hands-on exhibits featuring objects from nature, signs in large print, with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface and increased wattage in exhibit areas. 

For guests with mobility disabilities, the Bluebird Trail around visitor center is very accessible.  Some bicycle trails have packed dirt and may be accessible, but check with the visitor center for more information. Paved path along native plant arboretum leads to canoe dock.

One-half mile, self-interpreted, paved path around day use area. Three-fourths mile (one way), primitive, backwoods, ADA trail. Depending on ability, assistance may be required.

Although motorized vehicles are not permitted on park trails, electric wheelchairs and electric scooters that meet the federal definition for wheelchairs are allowed to enable people with disabilities to use the trails.

Amphitheater is universally accessible.

PICNIC SHELTER:  Shelters 1 and 2 have a paved path to access it and are on a concrete slab.  Table is not raised, but wheelchair can pull to either end.

Shelter 1 is near a playground and overlooks Taskinas Creek with a partial view of the York River. It can accommodate about 35 people under the shelter. Shelter is accessible with accessible parking and an adjacent walkway. The shelter is next to shelter 2 and near the parking area. Vehicles may not be driven directly to shelter. There's no electricity at this shelter.

Shelter 2 is located near the playground, with a partial view of Taskinas Creek. It can accommodate approximately 75 people. Shelter is accessible with accessible parking and an adjacent walkway. The shelter is next to shelter 1 and near the parking area. Vehicles may not be driven directly to shelter. There's one electric outlet at this shelter.

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 36 in. wide.  Counters 42 in. high.  Aisles clear of temporary displays. T-shirts, snacks and drinks are available. Paddleboats, jonboats, canoes and kayaks can be rented for use on a 7-acre pond, and canoes and kayaks can be rented and used on Taskinas Creek and the York River. No bicycle rentals.

STAFF TRAINING:  Because of newly developed hearing and visual special needs program for students, naturalists have been trained to work with these students so they can receive the most effective experience in the safest manner possible.
