DIRECTIONS: Off I-81, exit 17 onto Cummings St.  At 2nd light turn right onto Main St.  Inn on the immediate right.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Originally built in 1832, The Martha Washington Inn has seen many different uses. When the armies of the Civil War battled in and around Abingdon, the building served as a hospital for wounded soldiers, and romantic stories of nurses and soldiers still endure to this day. After the Civil War The Martha became a women’s college and today is an elegant hotel, paying homage to its gracious Southern roots and enduring historic legacy.

PARKING:  5 wheelchair accessible parking spaces in front and rear of Inn.  Nearby ramps well marked.

ENTRANCE:  Front and rear of Inn.  Handrails on left/right.  Ramps provided.  Glass doors easily opened with clearly marked bar handle. 

FACILITIES:  Signage printed in contrasting colors.  Luggage handling available.  Lowered drinking fountains.  Non-smoking rooms. 

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  1st floor.  Doors 36 in. wide, open in.  No turns to enter.  Accessible stalls have 38 in. wide doors opening in, and handrails.  19 in. toilet seat height, 12 in. between commode and wall.  Sink ht. 28 in.  Wrapped pipes.  Accessible stall checked for obstructions.

ELEVATOR:  Wheelchair accessible elevator with sound indicator serves 1st, 2nd, 3rd floors.  Buttons raised.  Door open 10 seconds.  Interior of car is  72  in. by 84  in.

ACCOMMODATIONS:  Wheelchair accessible room on 1st floor, with   double bed on a frame with no obstruction beneath.  60 inch circular clearspace in room and bathroom.  Bathroom door is 36 in. wide.  Wheelchair accessible toilet is 19 inches high with room for a lateral transfer.  Grab bar in tub.  Roll-in showers.  Sink 33 in. high.  Wrapped pipes.  Large digit display alarm clocks.  Smoke alarm with flashing light.  Room light flashes when phone rings.  Vibrating alarm clock.  Lever handles on doors.  Closet rods wheelchair height.  Extended drapery rod pulls.  Lowered light switches, thermostat and peep holes.

RESTAURANT:  All tables accessible for guests in wheelchairs.  Table 36 in. high, aisle width between tables is 48 in.   

SAFETY PROCEDURES:  Front desk personnel made aware of guests with disabilities, and their type, in case of emergency. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Accepted credit cards:  V, MC and AE.  Check-in 3 PM, check-out Noon.  Room service, gift shop, and cable TV.
