GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia, is a regional treasure and nationally recognized professional theatre. Enjoy up to four shows in two days. Two theatres bring audiences a great selection of comedies, musicals, dramas and new works year-round. Enhance your Barter experience with special packages. Barter was founded during the Great Depression by Robert Porterfield, an out of work actor living in New York who saw an abundance of food in his homeland SW VA, but no live theatre. He opened the doors in 1933 proclaiming, "With vegetables you cannot sell, you can buy a good laugh." Gregory Peck, Ernest Bognine, Patricia Neal, Ned Beatty, Hume Cronyn, Gary Collins and Larry Linville are among the many famous alumni who launched their careers here.

PARKING:  Designated accessible parking spaces in front of both theatres on Main Street, as well as in the Barter Theatre parking lot adjacent to Barter Stage II. Link to parking map.

TYPES OF PATHS:  Paths are cemented brick sidewalks, with steep grades which would require assistance for persons in wheelchairs.  Ramps provided.  Paths have 3 switch backs 20 ft. each long.  Staff will assist guests upon request.

ENTRANCE:  40 ft. from curb ramp to ramp into building.  3 other entrances with steps, 3, 4, or 5 exterior steps, each 6-7 in. in height.  Handrails on left and right.  Ramps provided.  Entry doors, 35 in. wide, easily open out with grab handle located 32 in. above floor.  20 interior steps, in lobby, leading to balcony.  Each step is 6 in. high.  Handrails on left and right.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Accessible restrooms are located on the ground floor of Barter’s Gilliam Stage as well as Barter Stage II.  Doors are 35 in. wide, and open in.  Turns to enter.  Accessible stalls have 32 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails.  29 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 34 in.  Pipes are wrapped.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions. 

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, tours in American Sign Language and signing interpreters are available with advance notice.  Written scripts and Assistive Listening System available upon request. A hearing loop has been installed to assist those with hearing aids or cochlear implants equipped with Telecoils (T-coil). Free FM Phonic headphones are available on request at the Gift Shop.

For guests with visual disabilities, there are signs and brochures  in large print, with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface.  

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 32 in. wide.  Counters 36 in. high.  Clerks assist customers with special needs.  Aisles clear of temporary displays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Guests in wheelchairs call in advance to arrange for special seating.  Credit cards:  MC, V and DS.  48-hour advance cancellation policy, strictly enforced.  No children under five.  Students and group discounts.

Box Office Hours: Tue—Sat, 9– 5, Sun 1 – 5. Extended hours for evening performances.
