GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The History Museum of Western Virginia takes visitors on a trip that spans the 10,000-year history of Western Virginia. Exhibits show early settlements of Native Americans through present day. Revolving exhibits, a research library and a gift shop are also available. The museum provides children’s educational programs throughout the year.
The History Museum's permanent exhibit, "The Roanoke Valley, A Crossroads of History," uses a wide variety of artifacts, furniture, clothing, and decorative arts to chronicle life in the region from prehistoric times through World War II. The Theatre History Gallery features costumes, pictures and memorabilia from Roanoke's most beloved stage and screen theatres, past and present. The Museum is home to the new Watts Library containing a vast collection of books, photographs, letters and manuscripts.
PARKING: 9 accessible parking spaces located first floor Center in the Square. Nearby ramps well marked.

ENTRANCE: Located 3rd floor, Center in the Square - Elevator access.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located Center in the Square. Doors 34 in. wide, open in. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls have 34 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height, 10 in. between commode and wall. Sink height 29 in. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
ELEVATOR: Wheelchair accessible elevator with sound indicator, located first floor Center in the Square. Buttons in braille and raised. Door stays open 6 seconds.

For guests with hearing disabilities, written scripts are available.
For guests with visual disabilities, hands-on exhibits such as children’s tactile exhibit/educational program are available for school groups with advanced notice (scheduling) through the Museum’s Education Coordinator, 540-342-5770. Signs printed with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface.
