New Market is located in Shenandoah County in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. The town played an active role during the Civil War, especially during the 1864 Battle of New Market. National Historic Landmark New Market Battlefield State Historical Park interprets the Battle of New Market, emphasizing the role of the VMI Cadets.
