DIRECTIONS: From I-81 N, take first Lexington exit, follow Rte 11 which becomes Main St. Washington and Lee is on the left. From I-81 S, take 2nd Lexington exit (I-64-w) to Rte 11 South.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Built at the request and under the supervision of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in 1867 when he was president of then Washington College. The famous recumbent statue of General Lee by Edward Valentine is on the main floor. On the lower level Lee's office is preserved much as he left it. He and his family are buried in the lower level of the Chapel. The Washington-Custis-Lee collection of portraits, including the well-known Charles Wilson Peale portrait of George Washington, are in the Chapel and its museum. General Lee's famous horse, Traveller, is buried outside the Chapel.
PARKING: Located at side and rear of Chapel.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: Paved sidewalk. Paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities, but steep grades may require assistance for persons in wheelchairs. Length of path one eighth of a mile.
ENTRANCE: Located at front and side of building (chapel). Double doors easily opened.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located in rear of museum. Door 32 in. wide, opens in. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls w/35 in. wide doors opening in, and handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height, 10 in. between commode and wall. Sink height 34 in. Wrapped pipes. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
GIFT SHOP: Aisles 71 in. wide. Counters 35 in. high. Aisles clear of temporary displays.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Free admission. Gift shop accepts MC, DS and V. Museum is self guided. Hours: Apr 1-Oct 31, Mon-Sat 9-5, Sun 1-5; Nov 1-Mar 31, Mon-Sat 9-4, Sun 1-4. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Holiday hours are reduced; please call ahead to verify times. General Lee statue is not accessible by wheelchair.
