DIRECTIONS: I-81, Exit 245 at Harrisonburg. West on Port Republic Road, left on Rte 42, right on Rte 732. Go left at “T” in road. Right on Bowman Rd. Left on High Street.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Society features excellent exhibits in their Heritage Museum depicting the history of the Rockingham County/Harrisonburg area; an electric map highlighting Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign in 1862; an extensive genealogy library with guides to assist with your research; a large selection of history books for sale with online ordering; and a folk art collection.
PARKING: 15 wheelchair accessible parking spaces.
TYPES OF PATHS: Paths are paved, no steep grades requiring assistance for persons in wheelchairs. Paths are 30 ft. long.
ENTRANCE: Front, rear. Rear-no steps. Front-2 exterior steps, each 7 in. in height, marked with tactile strip/color change. Entry doors, 36 in. wide, easily open in with turning handle located 37 in. above floor. Steps in lobby, to exhibit area and library. Each is 7 in. high. Handrails.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Ground floor at rear of building. Doors 36 in. wide, open out. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls have 36 in. wide doors opening in, handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height, 9 in. between commode and wall. Sink height 34 in. Pipes wrapped. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
ELEVATOR: Interior of car is 35 in. by 70 in.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with visual disabilities,there are signs with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface. There is increased wattage lighting in meeting areas.
GIFT SHOP: Counters 44 in. high. Clerks assist customers with special needs. Aisles clear of temporary displays.
