DIRECTIONS: 5 miles Southeast of Mechanicsville on rte 156.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Midway between two shabby crossroad taverns - Old and New Cold Harbor - the Confederates dug in on June 1-2, 1864 to await Grant's attack. It came on June 3, a frontal assault on a narrow section of the line, and it cost the Federals 7,000 casualties in 30 minutes. The well-preserved trenches along the 1.25 mile tour road are fine examples of Civil War field fortifications. A one-mile walk begins at the visitor center.
PARKING: 1 designated accessible parking space, located next to Visitor Center. Nearby ramps well marked. RV parking.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: Hard surfaced paths accessible to persons with mobility impairments. Steep grades may require assistance for persons in wheelchairs.
ENTRANCE: In front of Visitor Center at ground level. Glass doors easily opened with handles clearly marked in contrasting color.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: At side of Visitor Center on ground level. Available without steps. Wheelchair accessible stall opening out and handrails. Wrapped pipes. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions. Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available. Rest rooms identified by raised figures with pants or skirt on the door to designate men or women.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: No admission fee, open daily from 9- 4:30. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
