DIRECTIONS: I-64, Exit Rte 20 South, left onto Rte 53, stay right after Jefferson Vineyard, right onto Rte 795, Ash Lawn Highland on right.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Home of President James Monroe.
PARKING: 4 wheelchair accessible parking spaces.
TYPES OF PATHS: Path from parking lot to gift shop is rough pavement. Mostly brick paths around the house, garden and smaller buildings, some requiring assistance for persons in wheelchairs.
ENTRANCE: Through gift shop. Wheelchair entrance through a ramped side entrance. 2 in. doorway lip. 4 exterior steps, each 4-8 in. in height. Handrails on left and right. Entry doors, 34 in. wide, easily open in with knob handle located 35 in. above floor. Interior steps located entrance hall to sitting room. Handrails.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: At entrance to the attraction. 1 in. rise into restroom. Doors 33 in. wide, and open in. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls have 32 in. wide doors opening out and handrails. 12 in. between commode edge and wall. Sink height is 30 in. Pipes wrapped. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions. Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, there are written scripts available in 10 languages.
For guests with visual disabilities, there are braille scripts and hands-on exhibits. There are chickens, peacocks and sheep which visitors may pet. Documents/signage in large print on non-glossy surface. There is increased wattage lighting in dining and meeting areas.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES: Snacks and soft drinks available in gift shop. 5 picnic tables.
GIFT SHOP: Aisles 30 in. wide. Counters 43 in. high. Clerks assist customers with special needs. Aisles clear of temporary displays.
STAFF TRAINING: Tour guides and gift shop sales personnel have been trained to serve guests in wheelchairs, guests with mobility, visual, or hearing disabilities. Training takes several hours and is conducted 3-4 times a year. There is a monthly staff meeting for guides.
