GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Historic Roanoke City Market is the oldest such market in continuous use in Virginia. In 1882 licenses were issued to 25 hucksters. The city of Roanoke's first charter formally authorized a municipally owned market in 1884, and the first permanent Market Building was completed in 1886.
This formed the core of a vibrant open-air market in and around the Market Square which continues to operate today as a vital center for Downtown Roanoke. There are 42 permanent tables covered by blue and white awnings that mark an inviting display of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and plants during growing season. There are additional spaces in Market Square where vendors erect tents to display their wares. In recent years, a number of artisans have joined the farmers and planters offering handcrafted items, unique jewelry, and other art objects.
Visit the Market year-round for produce of every sort and the finest regional crafts. The Historic Market building offers a food court and fantastic shopping opportunities. The entire Market District includes unique shopping, galleries, boutiques, restaurants, antique shops, museum shops, and much more.
