DIRECTIONS: Route 50 in Clarke County - nine miles east of Winchester. 4 miles west of Shenandoah River.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The State Arboretum of Virginia is part of Blandy Experimental Farm, a research field station for the University of Virginia. The Arboretum collection includes the largest variety of boxwood cultivars in North America and more than half the world's pine species as well as a Virginia Native Plant Trail, an herb garden, extensive collections of perennials, a native plant meadow, and more. The collection emphasizes native trees and woody shrubs and their exotic relatives. It is the only mature arboretum on limestone soils on the east coast. A 3-mile loop drive, walking trails, and a 4-mile bridle trail offer many choices for visitors.
PARKING: Designated accessible parking space located near the main area. RV parking.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: Gravel, very small wooden borders, off-trail exploration is on uneven ground. Most paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities.
ENTRANCE: Located in Parkfield Learning Center. 5 exterior steps. Handrails on left/right. Ramps provided. Entry door, 28 in. wide single, when double 56 in. wide, easily opened with round metal knob handle located 36 in. above floor.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located Parkfield Learning Center and Quarter’s Building. 5 exterior steps with handrails at Learning Center. Quarters rest rooms accessible without steps. Wheelchair accessible stalls: 34 in. wide doors opening in/out and handrails. Sink height 34 in. Wrapped pipes.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities: Amplified audio units. Some written scripts and brochures available.
For guests with visual disabilities: Hands-on exhibits. Signs with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Open year round, dawn to dusk, free of charge. Education programs - field trips. Special programs such as workshops may have costs.
