DIRECTIONS: George Washington Parkway in Old Town Alexandria, one block South of King Street, corner of Prince and S. Washington Streets.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Alexandria's History Museum" collects, preserves and interprets the history and material culture of the city of Alexandria and the surrounding Northern Virginia area. Features prints, documents, photographs, ceramics, silver, furniture and Civil War memorabilia. The Greek Revival building was constructed in 1839 as the city's first cultural center. In 1974, it was restored and converted to the nation's first bicentennial center. Opened as the city history museum in 1985.

PARKING:  1 designated accessible parking space.  Located 1st space in  parking lot, left side.  Nearby ramps well marked. Also have metered parking on the street.

TYPES OF PATHS:  Paved walks.  Interior has wood floors and low pile carpet.  No steep grades.

ENTRANCE:  South side of building.  Ramps provided.  Glass entry doors, 36 in. wide, open out with clearly marked large metal handles located 42 in. above floor.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  Main floor, side entrance.  Doors are 36 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter.  Accessible stalls have 36 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails.  19 in. toilet seat height.  Sink height 33 in.  Pipes wrapped.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.

ELEVATOR:  Wheelchair accessible elevator located in main entry foyer serves 1st and 2nd floors.  Door width 36 in.  Operated by building staff. 

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, there is an Assistive Listening System.

For guests with mobility disabilities, the museum is wheelchair accessible to the first and second floor public areas.

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 36 in. wide.  Counters 32-42 in. high.  Clerks assist customers with special needs. The Museum Shop offers a wide variety of gifts and merchandise from all of our Historic Alexandria Museums. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Admission fee. Accepted credit cards: V, MC and AE. Hours Mon–Sat 10-5; Sun 1-5. Closed: New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas 

The museum is located in Old Town Alexandria, near many shops, restaurants, and other museums and historic sites.
