GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Step right into the Museum's laboratory and see archaeologists at work reconstructing Alexandria's history, fragment by fragment. The Museum displays the results of recent digs and interprets the results of ongoing research through exhibitions, video, publications, seminars and tours. Artifacts include a 13,000-year-old Clovis point, 18th- and 19th-century local pottery, and Civil War items.
PARKING: Metered Parking is available on Union Street, with two or three hour parking on nearby residential streets. Parking regulations are strictly enforced. Nearby parking garages are shown on a convenient map. Link to Parking map in PDF format.
TYPES OF PATHS: Sidewalks with slight grades.
ENTRANCE: East (Riverside) doors at rear of building. Ramps provided. Automatic doors 85 in. wide, open out.
ELEVATOR: Wheelchair accessible elevator serves all three floors. Interior of car is 84 in. by 168 in.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: On each floor, center of building. Doors are 34 in. wide, and open in. No turns to enter. Accessible stalls, on first floor only, have 34 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height, and 14 in. between commode and wall. Sink height 33 in. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
SPECIAL SERVICES: For guests with hearing disabilities, there are signing interpreters available with advance notice.
For guests with visual disabilities, there are hands-on exhibits to examine various artifacts and study collections. Signs are in large print, with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Free admission. Hours: Sun 1 -5; Mon closed; Tue-Wed 10-3; Sat 10-5. The Alexandria Archaeology Museum is located in the Torpedo Factory Art Center on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria, near many shops, restaurants, and other museums and historic sites.
At the Museum, you can purchase ”I Dig Alexandria” t-shirts, Friends of Alexandria tote bags, note cards, holiday ornaments, and a variety of publications on archaeology in Alexandria.
