DIRECTIONS: Rte 29 South from Charlottesville, 23 miles to Rte 6 East, turn left, Rte 6 East to Rte 800, turn right.  Follow to Rte 617 and turn right.  Museum is shortly after this turn.  

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Housed in a simple two-story building at the crossroads of Schuyler and Rockfish River roads, the museum celebrates Earl Hamner, Jr., creator of “The Waltons,” the Emmy-winning show that ran for nine seasons, and centered around a rural family living between the Great Depression and World War 2. In one of his interviews Hamner acknowledged his happy childhood growing up in the Great Depression in the community of Schuyler. Many of the places mentioned on the series are real place names in Schuyler, located southwest of Charlottesville, Va., right at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The museum features six rooms of recreations of the sets used for “The Waltons” TV series including John-boy's bedroom, the living room, and the replica kitchen has period cabinetry, a wooden icebox and butter churn.

Ike Godsey's Store and Souvenir Shop is a replica of the old country store and post office. It is also a souvenir shop and one can send a postcard and stamped from "Waltons Mountain, Virginia".

PARKING:  2 wheelchair accessible parking spaces.

TYPES OF PATHS:  Asphalt.  Some loose gravel on asphalt.

ENTRANCE:  Front of building at left side.   Double entry doors, 61 in.wide, open out easily with “C” shaped pull handle located 36 in. above floor.  Interior steps at back of museum access the restroom downstairs.  Some steps marked with tactile strip/color change.  Handrails.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  In lounge on main floor.  Doors are 34 in. wide, open out.  Accessible stalls have handrails.  19 in. toilet seat height, 10 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height is 30 in.  Pipes wrapped.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.  Unisex and/or companion assisted rest room available at the public rest room.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities,there are tours in American Sign Language and signing interpreters available with advance notice.    

For guests with visual disabilities, there are hands-on exhibits and personal tour guides.  

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 35-36 in. wide.  Counters 35 in. high.  Clerks assist customers with special needs.  Aisles clear of temporary displays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  No credit cards accepted.  Admission fee.  Group rates. Open from March through Nov, closed for holidays. Hours are 10-4.
