DIRECTIONS: 29 North to exit 1A (Main Street/Downtown).  Follow Main Street to 9th Street and turn right onto 9th.  Follow 9th to corner of Jefferson & 9th (27 9th Street)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  A large open four story building with great accessibility on all levels, promoting creativity & learning through the hands on exhibits.  Experience a “walk through” heart.  Create music in the music studio, paint in paint box, build in the architecture gallery, milk a cow and float down the James River.

PARKING:  Accessible parking located 9th & Jefferson Sts.  RV parking.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Paved and stone sidewalks accessible to persons with mobility disabilities.  Length of paths 20 ft.

ENTRANCE:  On 9th Street.  Ramps provided.  2 glass entry doors, 40 in. wide, easily open out with clearly marked vertical & horizontal bar handle located 36 in. above floor.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  On first, second and fourth floors.  Available without steps.  Doors 35 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter on second floor.  Wheelchair accessible stalls have 32 in. wide doors opening in, and handrails.  19 in. toilet seat height, 10 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 24 in.  Accessible stall checked for obstructions.  Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available.  Rest rooms identified by raised figures with pants or skirt on the door to designate men or women.


ELEVATOR:  At center of building, serving all levels.  Door width 48 in.  Control buttons 41 in. high.  Car interior is 64 in. by 96 in.  Buttons in braille and raised.  Door stays open 8 seconds.  Audible floor change signal.

SPECIAL SERVICES:

For guests with hearing disabilities, there are signing interpreters available with advance notice. On request the museum can arrange for special tours and programs for all of its activities for visitors with special needs.

For guests with visual disabilities, there are hands-on exhibits.  Signs in large print, some with contrast to background color, printed on a non-glossy surface.  Increased wattage lighting in exhibit areas.

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 33 in. wide and clear of temporary displays. Counters 30 in. high. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Hours:  Tue-Sat 10 - 5 , Sun 1- 5, Closed Mon. Admission fee.  Amazement Square is wheelchair accessible and will make every effort to accommodate visitors with special needs.
