Wheelchair Accessible Transportation

One of the difficulties in traveling for persons with mobility or visual disabilities is finding accessible ground transportation. The following are links to paratransit, wheelchair-accessible taxis with lifts, and non-emergency medical transportation services available in Virginia.

We make no recommendations, but offer this information as a public service. You need to visit the websites and contact them to see if the company can meet your specific needs and requirements.

City Bus and Paratransit Services

Link to Blacksburg Transit (BT) has fully accessible low floor buses covering their service area. BT ACCESS compliments this service with door-to-door transport for eligible passengers from their door to the first exterior door of their destination.

Link to Norfolk/Virginia Beach Hampton Roads Transit offers low lloor “kneeling” buses on their fixed routes, and the light rail service station platforms have accessible elevator access and vehicles are equipped to accommodate four wheelchairs. Paratransit is available for eligible persons who cannot used fixed route services.

Link to Greater Richmond Transit (GRTC) whose entire fleet is equipped with wheelchair lifts. Thirty-one low-floor buses are currently servicing the metropolitan region. They offer a reduced-fare program that allows for seniors (65 or older) and persons with disabilities. Link to paratransit for curb-to-curb service for eligible riders.

Link to Greater Roanoke Transit (Valley Metro) serves Roanoke, Salem, and Vinton with a fleet that is 100 percent accessible. Link to STAR, the paratransit service for individuals who are unable to ride a Valley Metro bus.
