GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Visit a “retired” Coast Guard Lightship to learn how the crew lived and performed their mission. Built in 1915 as a navigational aide. Was part of the U.S. Coast Guard in WW II. Formerly known as No. 101 to Lighthouse Service and WAL 524 to the Coast Guard. Placed on waterfront as a nautical museum in 1967. Received National Historic Landmark status in 1989 and also designated as a Virginia Landmark. Last remaining ship of its class.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: Metal ramp and wood deck. 32 in. steep metal ramp (15’ long). Must cross grass to get to ramp. Steep grades may require assistance for persons in wheelchairs.
ENTRANCE: Located port side of ship. 3 in. high steps marked with tactile strip/color change. 1 entry door, 36 in. wide, opens out with bar handle located 36 in. above floor. Staff will assist. Ship bulkheads limit access for persons in wheelchairs.
For guests with visual disabilities, signs are on non-glossy surface.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Admission fee. Hours: Tu-Sat 10-5, Sun 1-5. No credit cards.
