GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Working farm for over 360 years on the banks of the James River. Visitors tour an antebellum mansion, stroll through gardens, view antique farm and forestry equipment or use the recreation area which has biking, hiking, swimming and picnicking.
PARKING: 8 wheelchair accessible parking spaces in different locations-visitor center, pool, mansion and picnic shelters. RV parking.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND PARK: 3 walking and bicycle trails, 1 is approximately 1.3 miles and paved, and leads from Visitor Center to mansion grounds, the other 2 are approximately 1/2 to 1 mile long and are grass and gravel leading to the creek. Some have steep grades requiring assistance for persons in wheelchairs.
ENTRANCE TO VISITOR CENTER: Located near picnic shelters and river. Entry doors open out with pull type handle.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: At Visitor Center. Doors open out. No turns to enter. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
PUBLIC TELEPHONE: Wheelchair accessible phone located at Visitor Center.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with mobility disabilities,the Olympic-sized swimming pool has a lift for access to pool by persons in wheelchairs. Bath house has accessible stall on men and women’s side. One bedroom wheelchair accessible overnight cabin located in historic area. Campground has wheelchair accessible site.
PICNIC AREAS: Near Visitor Center. Paths are dirt. Covered shelters.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Campground is open March through November, and cabins are available year round.
