Jamestown
Jamestown Settlement, a museum of 17th-century Virginia history, explores America’s first permanent English colony through film, galleries and living history in outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, three English ships and colonial fort, and a riverfront discovery area. Guided tours are offered daily. Gallery exhibits chronicle the nation’s 17th-century beginnings in Virginia in the context of its Powhatan, English and African cultures. On display are more than 500 artifacts from Europe and Africa, archaeological items.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Tells the story of Jamestown, America’s first permanent English colony. With gallery exhibits, film, and outdoor living history program in life-size recreated Powhatan Indian village, colonial fort, and the three ships that landed in 1607, and riverfront discovery area.
PARKING: 12 wheelchair accessible parking places with van accessible aisles.
TYPES OF PATHS: Hard surface with gradual slopes, connect all areas of the attraction, accessible for persons with mobility disabilities.
ENTRANCE: Automatic doors at museum entrances. Interior steps on ship Susan Constant. Each step is marked with tactile strip. Handrails. Ships are not accessible for wheelchairs. Staff will interpret on pier.
PUBLIC RESTROOMS: Located in lobby near museum theater and exhibit galleries, and at the ships pier. Wheelchair accessible toilet is 19 inches high with room for a lateral transfer. Sink height 32 in. Pipes wrapped. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions. Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, there are flashing strobe fire alarms. Galleries feature audio-video presentations with open captioning. Signing interpreters available with two weeks advance notice (call 888-868-7593 toll-free). Ask at visitor services to arrange an open captioned showing of the museum introductory film and/or earphones with assistive listening system. Assistive listening devices are available on request for use in the outdoor exhibit areas.
For guests with visual disabilities, outdoor interpretive areas offer a hands-on experience, with opportunities to handle reproductions of period artifacts. Museum gallery exhibit labels in large print, with contrasting background. New galleries opening in Fall 2006 feature some touchable objects, sound effects and audio-visual presentations. A guide will provide descriptive explanation with two weeks advance notice (call 888-868-7593 toll-free).
For guests with mobility disabilities, the aisles in the theater are 42 in. wide, with cut outs in the front and rear of theater for visitors in wheelchairs. Wheelchairs and motorized scooters are available at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis. There are lowered drinking fountains.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES: Jamestown Settlement Cafe is open 10 AM-5 PM. Indoor and outdoor seating available with 28 in. high tables.
GIFT SHOP: Personalized customer assistance offered to anyone in need. Wide aisles accommodate manual and motorized wheelchairs. Counters are 36 inches high. Wheelchair accessible registers available.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The site of the first permanent English-speaking settlement in North America. The first capital of Virginia for 92 years from 1607-1699. Part of Colonial National Historical Park.
PARKING: 3 unmarked accessible parking spaces. Located in front by path. Parking space is 13 ft. wide. Curb cuts. Ramps nearby are well marked. RV parking.
TYPES OF PATHS: Bridges are wooden planks with wheelchair strip. Accessible paths of hard packed dirt with oyster shells, with no steep grades.
ENTRANCE: Located down path 200 yards. 3 exterior steps, each 8 in. in height. Entry doors, 36 in. wide, open out with pull/push bar handle located 44 in. above floor. Glass doors have handles clearly marked in contrasting color.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located 150-200 ft. from parking lot. Doors are 35 in. wide, and open in. Turns must be made to enter. Stalls have 33 in. wide doors opening out and handrails. 21 in. toilet seat height, and 8 in. between commode edge and wall. Sink height is 35 in. Stall checked regularly for obstructions. Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, there are written scripts available.
For guests with visual disabilities, there are audio cassettes and portable tape recorders, hands-on exhibits such as driving/walking tours, Junior Ranger program for kids and signs with contrasting background.
GIFT SHOP: Aisles 35-57 in. wide. Counters 41 in. high. Clerks to assist customers with special needs. Aisles clear of temporary displays.
STAFF TRAINING: Permanent staff trained to serve guests in wheelchairs, guests with mobility, visual or hearing disabilities. Type of training lasts for 2-3 hours and is done once a year.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: There is an admission fee. Entrance station open 8:30-4:30. Golden Eagle, Golden Age, Golden Access Passes and National Park Passes are honored.
