Mabry Mill in the Springtime

 

The parkway follows the Appalachian Mountain chain and provides some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, ranging from 650 to 6,000 feet in elevation. At Milepost 176.1 is Mabry Mill, a restored gristmill/sawmill/ woodworking shop and blacksmith shop. Old time skills (basket weaving, seat caneing, spinning, and weaving) demonstrated. Applebutter making on Sundays in October - Oldtime bluegrass music on Sundays 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Historic Gristmill (1910), sawmill, blacksmith shop and other outdoor exhibits.  Cultural demonstrations in summer and fall.

PARKING:  5 wheelchair accessible parking spaces.

TYPES OF PATHS:  Entire trail is paved or flagstones.  No steep grades.  The mill can be viewed from either end of trail.  There is a set of stairs to climb over the mill flume.  Handicapped parking for Historic Area is in “Overflow Parking” area in front of accessible rest rooms.  Short portion of trail leading from parking lot to exhibits is gravel.  Paths are 1/2 to 1 mile long.

ENTRANCE:  Located north end of mill.  Doors always open if mill is open.  Entry doors, 33 in. wide, open in with pull handle.  3 interior steps inside lobby located between entrance and exit.  Each step is 8 in. high.  Historic buildings have wooden, unpainted floors.  Blacksmith shop has wide path, no steps.  Matthews Cabin has 34 in. entrance with ramp.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  In parking lot.  Doors are 36 in. wide, open out.  No turns to enter womens, 90 degree turn to mens.  Accessible stalls have 32 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails.  15 in. between toilet and wall.  Sink height 32 in.  Pipes wrapped.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.  Unisex and/or companion assisted rest room available at the public rest room.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with visual disabilities,there are hands-on exhibits, and documents in large print on non-glossy surface.    

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 36-48 in. wide.  Counters 48 in. high.  Clerks assist customers with special needs.  Aisles clear of temporary displays.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS: North of entrance. Doors 36 in. wide, open out. Accessible stalls have 45 in. wide doorway, and handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height. Sink height is 22 in.

DINING: Pedestal tables for guests in wheelchairs, located throughout. Table height 31 in. Aisle width between tables is 24-42 in. Menus are available on non-glossy surface.
