GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A unique educational facility of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, designed especially for students, collectors, teachers, artists and others who have a serious interest in natural history. This satellite education center of the Smithsonian offers hands-on access to 30,000 natual history objects for group or individual study. For visitors 10 years or older.
PARKING: 4 designated accessible parking spaces, located directly in front, approximately 50 ft. from the front door. Accessible parking space 9 ft. wide. Accessible aisle 3 ft. wide. Nearby ramps well marked.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: Asphalt, concrete and brick. Paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities. Steep grades may require assistance for persons in wheelchairs. Length of paths 75 ft. from entrance.
ENTRANCE: 1 entry door opening out with long vertical pull handle located 36 in. above floor.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: One to left of entrance and one in main room. Available without steps. Doors 36 in. wide, open in. Turns to enter. Wheelchair accessible stalls: 32 in. wide doors opening out and handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height, 11-15 in. between commode and wall. Sink height 29 in. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions. Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with visual disabilities: Hands-on exhibits. Signs in large print, with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface.
