DIRECTIONS: 8 miles south of Alexandria at the southern end of the George Washington Memorial Parkway

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The riverside estate of George Washington now includes the Ford Orientation Center and Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, new facilities with 25 galleries and theaters, more than 700 artifacts, and interactive displays that introduce visitors to the real George Washington. The most famous dentures in the world are on display, along with three life-size models of Washington created from a forensic investigation.

The historic area features the restored Mansion, original outbuildings, the tomb where the Washingtons are buried,the slave memorial and burial ground, beautiful gardens, and heritage breed animals who work at a four-acre farm site near the river. George Washington’s Distillery is now open 10-5 April through October, and is located adjacent to the Gristmill.

PARKING:  11 wheelchair accessible parking spaces. Parking lots on the east and west sides of the George Washington Memorial Parkway as you approach the entrance. If these parking lots are full, you will be directed to an overflow parking lot.  There are also spaces for RVs, motor coaches and trailers, in the east parking lot and overflow parking lot.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Paths from parking to entrance are paved and level, with curb cut.  Estate paths are brick, packed earth, or small gravel, some with steep grades requiring assistance for persons in wheelchairs.  Short stretch of cobblestone at bowling green can be avoided by alternate rte. 

ENTRANCE:  Ramp  provided.  Entry doors, 36 in. wide, open in with round handle.  20 interior steps to upper floor.  Each step is 6 in. high.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  At Greenhouse, farm site and new Inn complex.   Doors 36 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter.  80 in. between commode and wall.  Pipes under sink wrapped.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Unisex and/or companion assisted rest room available at the public rest room.

SPECIAL SERVICES:

Link to Mount Vernon app for iPhone and Andrioid devices. It has audio tours tours covering the history, architecture, and gardens; onboard maps including floor plans of the Mansion, information on hundreds of points of interest, and you can even take a selfie with you wearing a variety of colonial styled headgear and clothing.

For guests with hearing disabilities,there are written scripts.  Guests  should inform the Interpreter so care may be taken during the tour to face the person as much as possible when speaking.  Assistive Listening System available in auditorium and on tours. 

For guests with visual disabilities, there are audio cassettes of grounds only, portable tape recorders and hands-on exhibits.  Braille guide also available.  Documents in large print on non-glossy surface.  
For guests with mobility disabilities, 125 ft. elevation drop from Mansion to River.  River can be reached without traveling steps, on a steep incline.  Upon request, a van will transport visitors up from the river.  In addition a bus runs every half hour from Apr-Oct.

For chiildren, the Agent 711: Revolutionary Spy Adventure App lets them go undercover to assist General Washington, America’s first spymaster, by solving puzzles and searching for clues as they explore Mount Vernon. Link to this app.

GIFT SHOPS:  Most aisles are 36 in., counter ht. 24-50 in.  Clerks assist customers with special needs. The Shops at Mount Vernon offer reproductions of Mount Vernon treasures, colonial toys and games, fine jewelry, and a large selection of Virginia foods and wines, plus toys, t-shirts, and other souvenirs.. Guidebooks, umbrellas, cameras, and other items to facilitate your tour are available at the General’s Store in the Ford Orientation Center. The Lady Washington Shop, located in the greenhouse slave quarters and next to the upper garden, has an assortment of gifts, heirloom plants, and seeds.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES:  All indoor food court tables are wheelchair accessible.  Limited outdoor seating of 2 accessible tables.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:   Major credit cards accepted.  Admission fee.  Hours: 9-5 Apr-Oct, 9-4 Nov-Mar. Open 365 days a year.  

Other outbuildings not open to the public, but doors are open for viewing with steps up to door.  The old tomb exhibit has 6-7 steps; however, the back may be seen from the main path.  Boat landing has 80 steps leading to it or graduated brick path and an additional gravel road (to wharf).  Steep incline for walking, but transportation is available for visitors with disabilities.  Van available to drive visitors up the hill and to return them to the wharf when the boat is ready to leave.
