DIRECTIONS: From Alexandria, turn left, and from Mt. Vernon turn right, toward the Potomac River, take an immediate right on E Boulevard Drive entrance to the Collingwood parking area.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Originally part of George Washington's River Farm, the Collingwood Library is now a unique library on Americana. With its extensive collection of books on American heritage and a genealogy section on loan from the Mayflower Society of Washington, the library features replicas of the Constitution and the Magna Carta. The nine-acre grounds, situated between Alexandria and Mount Vernon, offer picturesque views of the Potomac River at a place where ferries crossed the river in Revolutionary times.
PARKING: 5 wheelchair accessible parking spaces. Parking lot, front and rear.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: Cement, black top and paved. Paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities.
ENTRANCE: Front and rear. 6 exterior steps, each 6 in. high. Hand rails on left/right. Ramps provided. 1 entry door, 85 in. wide, easily opens in with knob handle. Steps inside lobby, in hallway. Handrails on left/right.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: On main floor. Doors 35 in. wide. No turns to enter. Accessible stalls have 27 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height, 16 in. between commode and wall. Sink height 30 in. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions. Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women. Unisex and/or companion assisted rest room available at the public rest room.
ELEVATOR: Serves all levels. Door width 57 in. Control buttons 44 in. high. Key/hand operated.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Free admission. Hours: 10-4 Mon, and Wed thru Sat; 1-4 Sun, closed Tues. Increased wattage lighting in dining and meeting areas.
