GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Plantation home of George Washington.  Many original furnishings and 40 acres of gardens, fields and lawns.  

PARKING:  11 wheelchair accessible parking spaces.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Paths from parking to entrance are paved and level, with curb cut.  Estate paths are brick, packed earth, or small gravel, some with steep grades requiring assistance for persons in wheelchairs.  Short stretch of cobblestone at bowling green can be avoided by alternate rte. 

ENTRANCE:  Ramp  provided.  Entry doors, 36 in. wide, open in with round handle.  20 interior steps to upper floor.  Each step is 6 in. high.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  At Greenhouse, farm site and new Inn complex.   Doors 36 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter.  80 in. between commode and wall.  Pipes under sink wrapped.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Unisex and/or companion assisted rest room available at the public rest room.

PUBLIC TELEPHONE:  Wheelchair accessible public telephone at main entrance and at Inn.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities,there are written scripts.  Guests  should inform the Interpreter so care may be taken during the tour to face the person as much as possible when speaking.  Assistive Listening System available in auditorium and on tours. 
For guests with visual disabilities, there are audio cassettes of grounds only, portable tape recorders and hands-on exhibits.  Braille guide also available.  Documents in large print on non-glossy surface.  
For guests with mobility disabilities, 125 ft. elevation drop from Mansion to River.  River can be reached without traveling steps, on a steep incline.  Upon request, a van will transport visitors up from the river.  In addition a bus runs every half hour from Apr-Oct.

GIFT SHOP:  Most aisles are 36 in., counter ht. 24-50 in.  Clerks assist customers with special needs.  Museum shop is small, larger shop at new Inn complex.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES:  All indoor food court tables are wheelchair accessible.  Limited outdoor seating of 2 accessible tables.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:   Major credit cards accepted.  Admission fee.  Hours: 8-5 Apr-Aug, 9-5 Mar, Sep and Oct and 9-4 Nov-Feb.   Other outbuildings not open to the public, but doors are open for viewing with steps up to door.  The old tomb exhibit has 6-7 steps; however, the back may be seen from the main path.  Boat landing has 80 steps leading to it or graduated brick path and an additional gravel road (to wharf).  Steep incline for walking, but transportation is available for visitors with disabilities.  Van available to drive visitors up the hill and to return them to the wharf when the boat is ready to leave.  New facilites opening Fall, 2001:  Shops at Mount Vernon, Food Court Pavilion, auditorium for small meetings and an expanded Mount Vernon Restaurant.  Open 365 days a year.

PARKING:  3 designated accessible parking spaces, located east and west side of circle at main entrance to estate.  Parking space 10 ft. wide.  Accessible aisle 4 ft. wide.  Ramps nearby well marked.

ENTRANCE:  Main entrance to Inn, and additional entrance through gift shop.  3 exterior steps, each 7 in. high, marked with tactile strip/color change.  Handrails on left/right. Entry door, 38 in. wide, easily opens out with knob handle located 36 in. above floor.  1 step, 7 in. high, inside lobby at back foyer.  Step  marked with tactile strip/color change.  Handrails.  Wheelchair accessible entrance to the restaurant through the Shops at Mount Vernon to avoid the outside entrance.  Shops on one level with ramp to dining rooms.

FACILITIES: 2 steps from the lobby level to the restaurant and lounge, 16 steps to other public rooms.  Lowered drinking fountains.  Signage printed in contrasting colors with recessed lettering.  Non-smoking areas available.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  Located main level.  2 steps required, steps 7 in. in ht.  Doors are 32 in. wide, open in.  Accessible stalls with handrails.  19  in. toilet seat height, 33 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 32 in.  Accessible stall checked for obstructions.  Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available without using stairs. 

PUBLIC TELEPHONE:  Accessible phones outside.  Lowered phones.  Numbers raised.

DINING:  There are 27 tables for guests in wheelchairs, located in 4 dining rooms.  Table height is 30 in.  Aisle width between tables is 40 in.   

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Accepted credit cards: V,  MC,  AE  and DS.  Hrs:  Mon- Sat lunch 11-3:30, Sun lunch 11-4.  Mon-Sat Dinner 5-9.  Reservations recommended for dinner.  Hours are subject to change.  Closed Christmas Day.
