DIRECTIONS: From D.C. I-66 W to Gainesville/Warrenton Exit 29S to Culpeper Rte 15 exit to Orange.  2nd stoplight turn right on W Main Street, to 1st left-3rd building on left.   

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The first museum in the United States to honor James Madison, the Museum’s mission is to preserve and present the remarkable history of Orange County, along with the contributions of the Father of the Constitution/President James Madison, First Lady, Dolley Madison and Orange-born President (General) Zachary Taylor. 

The Black History Room conveys the intertwined history of Black Americans from the American Revolution onward through Post-Emancipation.  The Madison Room displays numerous possessions of the Madisons and Taylor; along with a few from Washington, Jefferson and Monroe.  

Rotating special exhibits.  Agricultural artifacts, including early house completely reconstructed inside of museum.

PARKING:  1 wheelchair accessible parking space in church lot next door, approx. 100 ft. from entrance.  On-street parking, and grass/gravel lot behind museum.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Paved walkway, with curb cuts, in front of museum.  There is 1 clearly marked step down to a balcony overlooking the “Hall of Agriculture”.  From this level it is 13 steps down to display.  Entry to display level can be gained through a rear garage door, but is over a moderately steep grass and gravel grade.  (arrange with Administrator)

ENTRANCE:  Located at front of building, on street.  2 doors at main entrance:  1 door, 35 in. wide, opens in easily with knob 40 in. above floor. A 38 in. wide door is difficult to open.  Nearby receptionist will assist.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  In rear of building.  Doors 33 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter. Handrails. 19 in. toilet seat height, 13 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 33 in.  Accessible stall checked for obstructions.  Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available.

GIFT SHOP:  Books and pamphlets available for sale.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Admission Fee.  Open: Tue-Sat - 11-5:00.
