DIRECTIONS:  Located on rte. 20, four miles Southwest of Orange about 28 miles North of Charlottesville and 80 miles South of Washington, D. C.


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Montpelier was the lifelong home of James Madison.  Montpelier today is an estate of 2700 acres, with the historic home of James and Dolley Madison, gardens, a 200 acre old-growth forest, active archeology sites and breathtaking vistas.


PARKING:  3 designated accessible parking spaces, located 500 ft from mansion.  Accessible parking space 12 ft. wide.  Nearby ramps well marked.  RV parking.  Passenger drop-off area near entrance.


TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Crushed and pressed stone.  Length of paths 500 ft.  In addition, the first leg of the trail into the old-growth forest is wheelchair accessible.


ENTRANCE:  In front of mansion.  11 exterior steps, each 7 in. high.  Ramp access via back porch.  2 entry doors, 44 in. wide, easily open in with knob handle located 33 in. above floor.  Ground level entrance to Mansion that leads to elevator.  This wheelchair accessible elevator provides service to main floor.


PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  On ground floor of mansion.   Doors 34 in. wide, open out.  Turns to enter.  Wheelchair accessible stalls have 34 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails.  19 in. toilet seat.  Sink height 34 in.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available.  Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.


ELEVATOR:  Located ground floor/first floor of mansion.  Door width 33 in.  Control buttons 42 in. high.  Elevator car interior is 36 in. by 50 in.  


SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, there are amplified audio units.  Written scripts available.  Orientation video has closed caption option.


For guests with visual disabilities, there are audio cassettes and portable tape recorders.  Audio tour system provides more than 90 minutes of interpretive material on the house and grounds.  Increased wattage lighting in exhibit areas.


FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES:  Vending machines located near parking area.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Hours:  Apr - Oct 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Nov - Ma 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM.  Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Day, and New Year’s Day.  Admission fee.


MONTPELIER VISITOR CENTER/MUSEUM SHOP

PARKING:  3 designated accessible parking spaces, located closest to entrance.  Accessible parking space 8 ft. wide.  Nearby ramps well marked.  RV parking.


TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Asphalt paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities.  Length of paths 100 ft.


ENTRANCE:  Located rear of museum shop.  3 exterior steps, each 7 in. high.  Ramps provided.  2 entry doors, 52 in. wide, easily open in with latch handle located 35 in. above floor.


PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  In Visitor Center.  Doors 34 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter.  Wheelchair accessible stalls have 31 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails.  17 in. toilet seat height, 30 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 34 in.  Wrapped pipes.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Rest rooms identified by raised figures with pants or skirt on the door to designate men or women.


PUBLIC TELEPHONE:  Accessible phones located in Visitor Center.    Amplified headsets.


FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES:  Vending machines

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 34 in. wide.  Counters 34/36 in. high.  Aisles clear of temporary displays.  *Most aisles narrow*.
